I cast on for my Sockapal2za sock pal's socks over the weekend. I have made lots of socks, but mostly just plain stitch self-striping socks or ribbed socks or cabled socks. I have never made lace socks. I decided my sock pal had to have special socks. I dug out my Folk Socks book and picked the Latvian Lace socks using that strawberry colored cashmere/merino yarn I got a few weeks ago. I am amazed how quickly these socks are moving, and on size 0 needles! I have never used 0's either, mostly 1's and sometimes 2's for my socks depending on the yarn. I broke one of the little toothpicks on a k2tog and had to wait till Monday to get another set. I had no back-ups. Now I can break 4 more before I need to buy another set. The pattern/yarn combo makes a firm fabric, not nearly as flimsy as I assumed lace socks would be. Also, I only knit 9 of the 10 repeats before starting the heel flap because it was beginning to look long and my sock pal has dainty feet, so I figured it might be a knee sock if I went to 10. I am doing the pattern heel flap, even though it isn't one I would do for myself and I am considering not doing the star toe. It looks like it might be uncomfortable. I have a couple of different toes I prefer myself, I just don't know if I should foster my biases onto my sock pals feet. Any thoughts?
I made the same socks for my first Sockapal and then made a pair for myself. I loved the pattern, heel, toe and all and my pal seemed to, too.

I too have only made simple socks and am thinking of doing a lace one for my pal. You have inspired me to go ahead and try!
I would change the toe if you feel that it would be more comfy. Better to make the toe something you KNOW you like instead of taking a chance :-)

You know, I think part of the fun of the sock pal thing is trying new stuff. You are trying a new sock, so you could a) try the new toe as written, for fun or b)(my personal preference) help your pal to experience socks your way and do your fave heal and toe. Go with how you feel best!

Hmmm... I'm going to break with the rest of the folks with this and say to skip the star toe. I did one pattern with it and the toe fit isn't my favorite. But that's just me, and the socks are so beautiful I'm sure that your pal with love them regardless of which toe you choose.

These socks are really beautiful, I can't wait to see the finished pair! Your sock pal is lucky.

I'm loving the sock.... and the color is great! Which yarn are you using? My socks are on hold for now, while I get some projects for my classes and a couple of gifts completed. Hey, check out the really cute baby blanket I'm working on....

That's so gorgeous! (I love Tuesdays - so many pretty sockapalooza photos!) Now I'm hoping that 8.5" is considered dainty, becuase I want those to be mine. ;-)

Wow, those socks are wonderful. And the color is gorgeous. Personally, I don't like the star toe although I know many people who swear by it. for me, though, it's Kitchener all the way.

Beautiful pattern, Julia. I have so many sock dpns now, I don't even think in terms of sets. Your sock pal will love this pair.

Great socks, such a pretty color...too bad nothing about me is "dainty" :)
Here's a tip for you, I love the star toe but the "drawstring" finish seemed like it would be uncomfortable to me so I do the star toe and bring the stitches down to 3 or 4 on each needle (12 - 16 stitches total) and then kitchener the remaining stitches! It makes a toe that is way comfy and looks more like a real foot, to me anyway. I have pics of this type of toe being grafted on my blog from sometime in May if you want to have a look!
